
In 2013 I had no idea what kind of business I wanted to start. I only knew two things for certain; 1) I wanted a simple way to help people and 2) I hoped to create a referral-based business. I used to be a CPA and also spent 9 years selling Healthcare IT. I knew nothing about windows.
For a few months, I waffled and even considered going back into Healthcare sales. Luckily, I started thinking about my grandfather. He was a fantastic example of the man I have always been driven to model. He owned a glass company in Northeast Alabama. He was loved and respected within the community, and I always wanted to be like him. The more I looked into things, it seemed that replacement windows was a thriving industry in desperate need of a CONSULTATIVE approach. I needed to find out more about how these companies were run. I know….I’ll get a job with a replacement window company and find out!
So, I quickly found out that getting a job selling windows was easy. Sales reps are typically paid with 100% commission. It’s low risk for business owners as it pertains to salaries and payroll. I had ONE interview with a company…they hired me on the spot. I was glad to get a job, but I was also HIGHLY suspicious of what caliber of person was getting these jobs. Within 4 months, I was outselling EVERY member of the sales team. I had never sold windows in my life, but I was closing more than 50% of my sales calls some months. How? Well, I was doing EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what we were trained to do….you know, over-inflate the price and negotiate hard….refuse to leave a customer’s house until they kick you out of the door…get the contract or get booted…don’t take no for an answer. Well, I don’t buy from people like that, so I couldn’t sell like that either. I took on a consultative approach.
After 7 years, I’ve yet to hire another sales person. I refuse to put my company’s reputation in the hands of someone that’s incentivized to lie, because they’re being paid 100% commission. We’re still improving on our referral based business. It’s because I manage every part of the process. We have 5 Star reviews, because we always strive to do the job right. We set clear expectations with our customers, and we follow through to meet or exceed those expectations.
We keep our overhead low so that we can provide the best products at a lower price than our competition. We also don’t install junk. We’re not the cheapest…we’re the best value.
